California Dreamin'
This pattern was inspired by a trip to California long ago - on our honeymoon in fact.
We had landed in New York, spent some time on the East Coast around Boston and then headed over to San Francisco.
Before we went we'd watched a fascinating documentary about sea otters, and realising the coast of California is one place they might be seen, I was desperate to spot some.
As we drove down Pacific Highway 1, I kept pointing at the sea, telling Jay to stop I was sure I'd seen a sea otter. Each time we pulled over I'd scan the ocean - til he'd say "I'm sorry... I think it's probably a rock / sea weed / driftwood."
We didn't get to see any otters on our drive - but we did get to Monterey Bay Aquarium in Carmel and saw lots of the furry creatures!
Sea Otters like to float in the water, anchoring themselves by winding their bodies in kelp when they want a snooze. They're also one of a rare number of animals know to deliberately use tools - they pick up pebbles to bash open hard shells.
